Wild Things

Our class read the story, Where the Wild Things Are. Then they turned themselves into wild things. They are hanging out in the hallway with the title "Wild Things I Think I Love You". You will also find something I love about each one of them beside their picture. What a great group of kids!Cal is a Reading Machine! We are so proud of Cal. He reached 50 points today in Accelerated Reader. That means he has read and tested on over 100 books already this year. WOW!

For Sam

"I Love You Sam"

Jason's brother Sam left us a nice comment on this blog. He is in the military, which really interested the kids. I asked them if they knew what the military was. Alli said, "It's like the army because my dad used to work there". Marcus added that it could be the airforce.

I asked them what would be hard about being in the military. Keegan said it would be hard because bad guys might be aiming at you. Jason said you might get killed.

When I asked them what would be fun about being in the military Marcus said you might get to drive a B2 (he said it was an airplane shaped like a triangle and I believed him).

They all wanted to tell Sam, "Thank you for trying to save the people of the world".

Brave Warriors

Bryce and Kylee came to read to our class today. Kylee plays softball and Bryce plays football.
They read Sheila Rae the Brave, by Kevin Henkes. The students enjoyed telling the athletes how brave they were. As each one shared, the stories became even more unbelievable! Drew can walk backwards up a hill, Rylee doesn't "freak-out" when she sees a snake, and Eli rode on an alligators back!
Bryce and Drew agree that #13 is the best!Layne and Rylee chum up with Kylee.
Evanson and Brandon hope Bryce wins his game tonight.
The students thought it was neat that Bryce had the same name as the Bryce in our class.Thank you Kylee and Bryce for reading, answering questions, and signing our autograph books. We had fun!

Learning Addition Facts

We've started learning addition facts in math. We are starting with the doubles facts. First we learned a doubles rap.
Then we got our very own flashcards. We wrote the answers on the back of the cards and then practiced with a buddy. We're taking our cards home to practice each night too! After that we watched a cute video song on our smartboard. You can watch it at home too. I've added it to our links. Finally, we practiced on our own with a math worksheet. In reading we are still learning about animals. We read Babies on the Go by Linda Ashman and learned many different ways that animals babies get from one place to another.
First grade is a big year with a lot to learn. I'm proud of all of our kids for working so hard at school and practicing at home too.

When I Grow Up

Our class did a paragraph and drew a picture to tell us what they want to do when they grow up.

Layne wants to be a vet when she grows up. Rylee wants to marry Nick Jonas. Keegan wants to live in Joplin. Sierra wants to be a mail carrier. Brandon wants to live in California. Myla wants to stay in Seneca. Drew wants to marry a nice girl and have 3 kids. Patricia wants to be a doctor. Eli wants to live in Mississippi. Evanson wants 16 kids. Alli wants to be a cheerleader.

Jason wants to be a football player and have 6 kids. Cal wants to marry "no buty". Bryce wants to marry Myla, but only because his kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Whitehead, is taken.

Lance doesn't want to marry anyone, because he's going to live with his mom
When you are a teacher you get sweet and sometimes unusual compliments. Last year I was told that I was as pretty as a janitor. Today, Alli told me my earrings looked like cheeseballs. Most kids love cheeseballs, so I took it as a compliment.

Getting To Know Mrs. Ward's Class

Our athletes this week were Pryce and Stevie. The kids really loved them. Stevie is in our room every morning so the kids adore her. She's like a rock star to our class. They can't get enough of her.
This was the first time we had a boy and girl athlete together so of course one of the students asked, "Are you two married?"

Pryce and Stevie read Diary Of A Worm by Doreen Cronin. The kids thought it was hilarious.

I asked the kids some questions today that really made them think! Some of their answers were quite comical.
When asked who they would be if they could be anyone in the world, Brandon said "God 'cause I like him". Keegan said he would be his dad because he's smarter.

I asked Sierra where she would go if she could go anywhere in the world and she said "Kansas City because they have a waterslide". Alli's favorite food is macaroni because it's cheesy and tastes awesome! Myla loves strawberries because they are so sweet.

Jason is doing a terrific job in reading. He can read almost anything! Scotty's favorite food is spaghetti.

Rylee thinks guacamole is disgusting because it tastes like grass. If Layne could be any animal she would be a goat because they like to eat everything.

Lance would be a bull because they buck really hard. If Eli could be anyone in the world he would be the president because he's smart and he knows everything.

If Cal could be anyone he said "I would be my friend Alex because he's fast like me". Drew said he would be his friend Nick because he's fun to play with. Bryce said he would be his dad because he's nice.

Destiny loves to swim. Here she is showing our pictograph about our favorite sports.

Myla drags a picture of a volleyball to show her favorite sport on our graph.
Layne and Evanson were our Hug-A-Bears from last week!
Evanson hates rotten eggs because they are stinky. I've noticed he has a strong sense of smell. He loves the smell of our cadet teacher, Stevie. He "sniffs" her each day when she comes to our room. I'm glad she's a good sport!

This is my 9 month old baby Cole "helping" me grade papers.

Memorizing Presidents

We have been singing our 44 presidents song a couple of times a week. I am shocked at how many of the students are catching on and learning our presidents. They are so smart!

If you would like to practice with your child at home please check out the link on the right.

Working Hard

We have been blending sounds to make words. Today we added s to words to make them plural.
First we wrote the words on our whiteboards.
Then we wrote them on the smartboard.

We are reading books and taking tests on the computer!

We earn points for correct answers. Cal was the first student to reach 5 points and get a prize from the treasure chest!
Layne and Drew were our "secret stars". They earned a Starburst for good hallway behavior.
We have wonderful cadet teachers from the high school that help in our room everyday. We love you Stevie and Skyler!
