Game Day

Nathan and Jeff came to our class on Friday.

They read Wemberly Worried by Kevin Henkes. The students shared some of their worries with the athletes. They included tornadoes, various outdoor creatures, and crocodiles under the bed.

Nathan and Jeff patiently answered questions. We spent the first 5 minutes of question time trying to figure out what team they play for. For some reason this is confusing to many of them. They also asked questions about their football lockers and if they stunk. When Nathan and Jeff both answered yes, every student felt the need to give their solution to the stinky problem. They finally decided a plug in air freshener would be the best bet! Some of their questions have nothing to do with football such as, "Have you ever got stuck in a freezer?"

The athletes then posed for some photos and signed our autograph books.

Thanks Nathan and Jeff and good luck this year!

Piggin' Out

We are reading A Pig in a Wig this week from our reading book. We have been discussing the differences between fantasy and realism. One student said that this story is fantasy because a pig cannot eat with a spoon out of a bowl.

Rylee, who has a fifth grade brother, replies "My brother can eat with a spoon and he's a pig!" Very clever Rylee!

Birthdays

Cal and Eli celebrate their birthdays. In Mrs. Ward's class the girls bow down to the birthday boys! We then sing Happy Birthday and eat treats.

Getting out of the treasure chest is a fun treat for their birthdays!

Happy Birthday Eli and Cal!

Fun Friday

Friday started with our Rise and Shine assembly. Drew and Destiny got a hug and sucker from Hug-A-Bear. Congratulations you two!
We took several tests in the morning. After working hard all day we were happy to see our two athletes.

Dillan and Derrik read us a story, answered lots of interesting questions, and signed autographs.

I was Dillan's teacher when he was in third grade!

Bryce imagines what it would be like to score the game-winning touchdown!

Rylee and Alli buddy up with Derrik and Dillan.

The kids decided Dillan was #6 because he was smaller and Derrik was #53 because he was bigger. Drew (whose dad is the head football coach) asked if the coach was nice. Luckily they answered yes! They all want to go to the football game next Friday and yell for Dillan and Derrik!

On a personal note, Cole is getting bigger and learning new things everyday. He has started pulling up this week. Zoe is loving 1st grade and was glad to see all her friends again.

First Grade Fun

We are learning so much already. We each have our very own reading book. This week we are reading Sam, Come Back.

We are practicing our 3 expectations: Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be a Learner. It may take a little time for us to get it perfected!

We love our new smartboard! The math games are great!

Mrs. Barnes visited our class and read us a story. She is a wonderful principal.

I informed the class that starting this week athletes would come to our class and read a story to us. At the end of each quarter I told them that the top 2 point earners for Accelerated Reader would be able to choose their favorite athlete to eat lunch with them. Alli excitedly yelled out, "I choose Ben Roethlisberger!" I guess I should have told them the athletes would be from Seneca High School. Oops!

Maybe someday Alli!

Fancy Feathers

This has been a great first week of learning how first grade works. Next week we will jump in with our regular schedule.
In honor of all of Mrs. Ward's "smart cookies", we've been reading books about cookies and doing some fun activities.

We are getting to know each other and making new friends.

We have already earned a few fancy feathers for being safe, respectful learners. The yellow feather earned by Patricia was from the bus. The red feathers were earned at school by Eli, Lance, and Drew with the help from our entire class. When we earn 100 feathers Mrs. Barnes will give us a popcorn or ice cream party!

Great job Warriors!

First Day of School

Our first day of school is going really well. The kids seem very eager to learn!

We spent part of our morning organizing our school supplies and reviewing expectations at Seneca Elementary.

The students like having their own desk and space to work. They even got math offices to make their space private.

We did a fun graphing activity on our new smartboard.

They are exhausted, but it's been a fun day.

All About Mrs. Ward

My name is Marcy Ward. This is my 11th year at Seneca Elementary. I have taught Kindergarten, 3rd grade, 2nd grade, and this is my 3rd year in 1st grade. I love teaching and can't wait to begin a new year.

I live here in Seneca with my wonderful family. My husband, Brad, and I have been married for 12 years and I love him more today than ever! We have a daughter, Zoe, who is also in 1st grade. Cole was born December 2nd and is our surprise blessing. As many of you know Brad was diagnosed with cancer in 2007. The doctors told us that it was unlikely that we would have any more children because of the chemotherapy. However, God is good and we were blessed with another baby! Brad has been cancer free for 2 years and all is well in the Ward household!

I am very excited to get to know all of your children. I know it will be a fantastic year.
