Top Readers

Our top readers for this quarter were Cal, Drew, and Lance. They ate pizza with some of their buddies from the high school. Our very own, Skyler, ate pizza with Cal.
Jake ate with Drew. I was Jake's teacher in third grade so I had a lot to ask him about!!

Lance ate with Bryce. Bryce came to read to our class earlier this year.

I think the first graders ate more than the high school boys. After 4 slices of pizza and a Capri Sun, Cal accidently let out a pretty loud belch. That had all the boys laughing for quite a while!

Caring Kids

Our class made cards for kids in Haiti today. A parent of a child from another first grade class is going to help in Haiti and asked the first graders to make cards. Drew's card said "I am sorry that your country got destroyed". They all were very heart-felt and sweet.
I told them to put their names on the cards. I overheard one student say, "I'm going to put from Earth on mine because I think the people in Haiti are Japanese or something".

Please look for notes going home today called "Change for the Children". Our school is having a fundraiser to help a couple of orphanages that were badly damaged. Anything you can do to help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for teaching your children to love others. I am very impressed with the way this class thinks about and sincerely cares about other people.

From the Mouths of Babes

We have a couple of cute writing activities in our hallway. In Art last week the students made cute little hats with their New Year's Resolutions glued to the bottom. These were some of my favorites:
Bryce says, "I will spend more time with my poppy".Scotty says, "I will follow directions". Drew says, "I want to gain more weight". Man, I wish that were mine!!

We also did a writing project about things we love.
Alli said, "I love my mommy because she loves me and she macks pasta".
Rylee said, "I love my papa because he was love able and i love my grammy because she lets me have ice crem".
Evanson said, "I love rice and sausage".
Lance said, "I love football because I'm a quarterback and sinner".

Erin and Toby

Erin and Toby came to our class today. They both play basketball at Seneca High School. They read Miss Moo Visits the Zoo. The kids were really into the story. They loved the way Erin and Toby read the book.
They watched and giggled and enjoyed the book.

They also had several interesting questions for them. These were just a few: "Do you two ever play each other?", "Have you ever won a game?", "Do you have any brothers or sisters?", and "Can you slam dunk?"

The were very intrigued with Toby's height. Eli said, "I think you're bigger than my mother!" and Alli didn't think he could do a cartwheel because he would hit the ceiling.

Erin and Toby signed the kids' autograph books and visited with them a little more.

They were also good sports about taking pictures with the kids.

We had a good time and wish them luck with the rest of their season!

Eating Caterpillars

We've been reading I'm a Caterpillar out of our reading books and learning about the life cycle of a butterfly. Today we made and ATE caterpillars. It was messy but lots of fun.

Drew and Cal both passed tests on these chapter books. Wow, what great readers! We are happy to be going outside and looking forward to warmer weather.
