The kids made these adorable cat masks in art today! This week is Drug Awareness Week. Each day the students are dressed for the theme of the day. Monday was: Cool Cats Don't Do Drugs! Look how cool Rylee looks! No, that's not black lipstick. It's black icing from Myla's birthday treats!

Miss Morgan
Miss Morgan came to our class today. She is a freshman in college and is observing our class as part of her requirements to become a teacher one day.
The students were very curious as to why she was here. I told them she was in college and watching our classroom. Then I asked if they had any ideas of why she was going to college (thinking the answer was obvious, to become a teacher). Alli said she was going to college so she could drive a cherry red ferrari. So I clarified and asked what job she was going to college to learn about. They thought for awhile and Eli said monster truck driver, someone else said F.B.I., and another said race car driver. They asked her lots of questions like where she lived and what color her house was. Then they told her of all of the people they knew in college, or in some cases junior high.
They liked Morgan visiting our class and have all decided they will go to college one day too!

Spiders
Today we read the nonfiction book Spinning Spiders and the fiction story The Very Busy Spider. The students discovered similarities and differences of the two stories. Then they made their own spiders using the information from the nonfiction story.
- Spiders make webs. - Drew
- Spiders kill insects. - Myla
- Spiders drink the insects' blood. - Bryce
- Spiders have two main body parts. - Cal
- Spiders have eight legs. - Lance
- Spiders can have 2, 4, 6, 8 or no eyes.
It's not a fact, but Layne says that spiders are scary. I agree Layne!

Spooky
Mrs. Barnes read a Halloween story to us about a witch. She set the mood for the spooky story by turning off the lights and building suspense while reading. The kids loved it! After the story she asked for some spooky, Halloween sounds.
Evanson shows Mrs. Barnes his spooky sound. Thank you Mrs. Barnes for reading to us.

Fire Safety
The firefighters came today. They taught the kids about fire safety in a really fun way. They used puppets and songs and they even showed us their fire truck. When I asked the students what they learned, they said:
- if your clothes catch on fire stop, drop, and roll
- if you see matches or a lighter don't touch them, tell an adult
- if your house is on fire crawl out under the smoke
They learned a lot and enjoyed the presentation.
In math today the students used pattern blocks to cover an identical pattern in different ways.
Lunch With Our Favorite Athletes
Our top point earners at pizza and watched cartoons with their favorite athletes today.
Drew chose Dillan because he sometimes visits him in the locker room and Dillan is always nice to him. They asked Dillan why he always goes up the middle and he said that is where the hole is. But Drew knows from his vast experience with playing football on the Wii that usually you get tackled when you go up the middle.
Lance chose Nathan because he is so cool and nice. The boys asked Nathan to juggle the bottles but he could only juggle one!
Cal couldn't decide so he chose both Nathan and Dillan. Cal said the pizza was delicious and he had fun trying to stack bottles with Nathan and Dillan. They laughed and had a good time. Dillan and Nathan asked Drew, Cal, and Lance about girls, but the boys weren't interested in discussing that subject!

Our cadet teacher, Skyler, leads our class in the math meeting. Rylee adds to our weather graph. They also do calendar time and count. Today we did a graphing and adding activity. The children rolled two die, added them together and then graphed the sum.

Top Point Earners
It is the end of the first quarter and we have our top Accelerated Reader point earners. Cal was #1 with 65.2 points. That is an amazing amount of points in one quarter!! He has read and passed 143 books this year!!!
Drew and Lance came in #2 tied with exactly 34 points. This too is a great amount of points, considering we've only been doing A.R. for about 7 weeks. Great Job boys. They will eat lunch with their favorite athletes soon. Look for more pictures.
